The Best of Jazz poster – 1979
Partner/Designer – Paula Scher
The assignment: Get twenty names on a poster. Big. Do it fast. Make it cheap.
The solution: Paula Scher organized wood type at angles and tangents in a Russian Constructivist manner. The poster was printed on Kraft paper in red, white, black and yellow ink.
At the time the poster was created, the design looked radically different. Initially it was rejected from every show; then it was embraced everywhere and widely imitated (“and became a stylistic noose around my neck,” says Scher).
